Telescope, Flying Carpet and Magic Apple

Talmud had a story about a king who had a beautiful princess. He loved her so much but the princess was at a verge of death due to an illness.

Many doctors prescribed and applied all kinds of medicines but none worked. Becoming very desperate, the king proclaimed that whoever heals the princess will marry the princess and will eventually become the next king as the reward. Three brothers who lived far away from the palace heard of the news of the princess being ill and discussed to find a way to heal her.

Each of these brothers had a magical item: the first brother had a magic telescope that can see anywhere; the second brother had a magic carpet that can fly anywhere; and finally the third brother had a magic apple that can heal any illness. So they verified the proclamation with the magic telescope, and then they flew out to the palace on the magic carpet and gave the princess the magic apple.

The princess got better immediately. The king threw a banquet on behalf of these three brothers and to celebrate the princess’ recovery. As he wanted to announce the person who will marry the princess at the banquet, he had a dilemma. The king couldn’t decide which one to give his daughter to because they all took part in healing her. Knowing this the first brother reasoned, “Unless I saw the proclamation, none of us could have known about this reward and thus, I am the one who deserve to marry the princess.”

Then, the second brother argued, “Even if we found out, without my magic carpet we couldn’t get here in time to heal her and so I should be the one.” Finally, the third brother jumped in and said, “True, but without my magic apple, how can the princess be healed and thus, I am the one who should marry her.”

The king chose the third brother as his son-in-law. Here is the reason why: the first and the second brother will still have their magical items (telescope and carpet) even after the princess got well. On the other hand, the third brother had no longer his magic apple because the princess ate it. Thus, the king decided to give his daughter to the one who gave EVERYTHING to save the princess.

한 번은 모세가 우물가에 앉아 깊은 생각에 빠져 있었습니다. 그때 어떤 나그네가 물을 마시려고 우물가에 멈춰 섰습니다. 그가 물을 마시고 있을 때 그의 행랑에서 돈주머니가 흘러나와 땅에 떨어졌습니다. 여행객은 그 사실을 모른 채 떠났습니다. 얼마 안 있어 다른 여행객이 우물 근처를 지나가다가 돈주머니를 보고 가져가버렸습니다. 세 번째 사람이 왔는데 갈증을 해소하기 위해 물을 마시고 나서 우물 곁의 그늘에서 잠이 들었습니다.

한편 첫 번째 나그네는 돈주머니가 없어진 것을 발견하고서 분명히 우물에서 잃어버렸다고 추측했습니다. 그는 우물로 돌아와 자는 사람을 깨우고서 (물론 그는 지갑이나 돈에 관하여 아무 것도 모릅니다) 돈을 내놓으라고 요구했습니다. 심한 말다툼이 이어지고, 화가 난 첫 번째 나그네는 세 번째 사람을 살해하고 말았습니다.

모세는 그 자리에서 하나님께 말했습니다. “당신도 보셨다시피, 이렇기 때문에 사람들이 당신을 믿지 않는 것입니다. 이 세상에는 너무나 많은 악과 불법이 있습니다. 왜 첫 번째 사람이 그의 돈주머니를 잃어버리고 살인을 해야 했습니까? 왜 두 번째 사람은 주인을 찾으려는 노력돠 하지 않았는데 금으로 가득 찬 돈주머니를 가져갑니까? 세 번째 사람은 아무런 잘못을 하지 않았습니다. 그런데 왜 그가 살해당해야 합니까?

하나님께서 대답하셨습니다. “이런 질문에 대해 항상 대답해줄 수는 없다. 이번 단 한번만 네게 대답해 주겠다. 첫 번째 사람은 도둑의 아들이었다. 돈이 가득 든 돈주머니는 그의 아버지가 두 번째 사람의 아버지로부터 훔친 것이다. 두 번째 사람은 자기에게 주기로 되어 있었던 돈주머니를 찾으러 다니는 중이었다. 세 번째 사람은 살인자였다. 그가 범한 악행은 결코 드러나지 않았으므로 그는 당연히 받아야 할 형벌을 첫 번째 사람으로부터 받은 것이다. 앞으로는 네가 이해하지 못하는 상황이지만 거기에는 어떤 의미가 있고 정의가 흘러나온다는 것을 믿도록 하여라.”

‘순교자의 목소리’의 창설자인 리차드 웜브란드 (Richard Wumbrand) 목사의 One Hundred Prison Meditations [감옥에서의 백가지 묵상의 글]에 나오는 대목입니다. 구 소련이 그의 조국 루마니아를 점령하고 목사인 그는 감옥에 14년간 수감되어 있는 동안 경험하였던 하나님을 그는 감옥에서 증거하며 수 많은 사람들을 주께로 인도하였습니다.

위의 글은 비록 우리 눈에 악과 절망밖에 보이지 않는다고 하여도 하나님의 선하신 목적을 신뢰해야 함에 대해 잘 설명해주고 있습니다. 물론 그런 상황 속에서 하나님을 신뢰하기란 말처럼 쉽지 않습니다. 대단한 인내의 힘이 필요합니다. 우리의 힘이나 노력이 아닌 성령의 능력을 믿음으로만 인내의 내적 힘을 얻게 됩니다. “그의 영광의 힘을 따라 모든 능력으로 능하게 하시며 기쁨으로 모든 견딤과 오래 참음에 이르게 하시고” (골1:11)의 말씀이 바로 이 점에 대해 증거합니다. 영광의 힘에 대한 믿음을 통로로 하여 인내하게 하는 능력이 오는 것입니다.

그리고, 우리가 이렇게 인내하며 하나님의 선한 계획을 신뢰하면 우리 앞을 가로막고 있는 모든 장애물들이 극복되는 정도가 아니라 그것들이 복으로 바뀌게 될 것입니다. 이것은 하나님을 신뢰함으로 경험한 사람들만 알고 그 외의 사람들에게는 비밀로 감추어진 신비입니다. 오늘의 고난이 내일의 유익이 되게 하실 하나님의 선하신 계획과 능력과 지혜를 신뢰하는 우리 슈가로프 식구들이 되시길 빕니다.

A legend says that Moses once sat near a well in meditation. A wayfarer stopped to drink from the well, and when he did so his purse fell from his girdle into the sand. The man departed. Shortly afterwards another man passed near the well, saw the purse , and picked it up. Later a third man stopped to quench his thirst and went to sleep in the shadow of the well. Meanwhile, the first man had discovered that his purse was missing, and, assuming that he must have lost it at the well, returned, awoke the sleeper (who of course knew nothing), and demanded his money back. An argument followed, and irate, the first man slew the latter.

Whereupon Moses said to God, “You see, therefore men do not believe you. There is too much evil and injustice in the world. Why should the first man have lost his purse and then become a murderer? Why should the second have gotten a purse full of gold without having worked for it? The third was completely innocent. Why was he slain?”

God answered, “For once and only once, I will give you an explanation. I cannot do it at every step. The first man was a thief’s son. The purse contained money stolen by his father from the father of the second man, who finding the purse only found what was due him. The third was a murderer whose crime had never been revealed and who received from the first the punishment he deserved. In the future, believe that there is sense and righteousness in what transpires even when you do not understand." (100 Prison Meditations, pages 6–7)
